Moving Sucks! - part one

Well, it is done! We loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly. Not exactly, but we did move over the hill to Paonia. As far as we are concerned, it is way better than Beverly Hills. Paonia, or P town, is in the North Fork valley, 60 miles south of Carbondale over McClure Pass. It is a farming and ranching community with a growing music and arts scene. So, moving... Yes, it truly sucks! Adriane has been boxing up the house for a month now and it was still a pain in the ass. We rented a 16' Budget rental truck and Jeff Britt and John Ensign came over to help us load it. It started out with us carefully loading, figuring out exactly which box would fit in which space, but ended with us jamming the truck full of what ever would fit. It was loaded to the roof. Once we got her loaded, we headed over the hill. Since there wasn't "much" left in the house we decided to bring the kitties with us. We put Vesta in a cat carrier since she freaks out in the car. Xena, on the other hand loves driving. She has been know to stand on my lap with her hands on the steering wheel, looking out the window. Unfortunately for Xena, the drive was up a windy mountain pass and down an equaly windy descent, so she had to sit patiently on Adriane's lap. Unless there is killing involved, cats are not patient. Lazy maybe, but not patient. Adriane had to pat her the whole way over. It is tough being a cat. Once we arrived in Paonia we began to unload. We had moved a few things in when our neighbor Patty came riding by. We know Skip and Patty from Carbondale, in fact, they deejayed our wedding. Patty ran home and grabbed Skip and came back to help. While she was away, our Paonia sponsor, Jeff Legg, saw us from the store across the street and came to help as well. While it wasn't the most orderly unload, we did get everything in to the house. While Adriane ran off to buy curtains, I started the task of clearing a zone. We went with the same method that they used during the surge in Iraq; clear, hold, build. I cleared out the living room, got a hold of myself and then built it up with the proper furnishings. After a while I was able to get control of the living room, the insurgents were tough, but we were tougher. After the battle I plopped down on the couch and watched football. After a little dinner in town we fell into a deep sleep and woke bright and early to finish the moving, but that is a story for another day.
