King and Queen For A Day

Ah, yes, St. Patrick's Day, when a young man's fancy turns to booze. Normally, I may go out and have a Guiness or two, but this year was different. Adriane and I were elected king and queen of the St. Patty's Day parade. What an honor, following in the footsteps of Carbondale legends like Tim O'Rourke and Betty Boop Olsen. Our reign began with, of course, the parade. Now for those that don't live here, Carbondale is big on parades. We have at least five or six a year, starting with St. Pat's and culminating with Potato Day. Parades can be of the organized type with firetrucks and the like or just a bunch of hippies with dandelions stuck in their hair. St. Pat's falls somewhere in between. The king and queen rode in a convertible waving to our adoring minions. Claddaugh's Pub and the American Legion had floats. Solar Energy International drove their electric/solar bus. A number of people running for town council walked, as did a bunch of kids. All in all, it was quite a fun time. Of course, that is only half the duties of the king and queen. We then had to put in an appearance at Claddaugh's and press the flesh. After a couple of Guinesses or Guini, we made our way over to the Legion for some corned beef and cabbage and a few pictures with our fellow Legionnaires. Then it was off to the Pour House for a nice piece of peach cobbler a la mode. After all of that it was time to head home and and hold down the couch. We would like to thank the Floral Boutique for providing us with a corsage and a crown of flowers for the queen. I guess, if you think about, it isn't just king and queen for a day, but we will reign until next St. Pat's when we will pass on our titles to the next king and queen. http://www.tomandadriane.com/node/532 Mouse over the text to select it, then press Ctrl-C to copy it. |
